The Bay of Islands should not miss on your New Zealand bucket list. It is only a 3,5-hour drive from Auckland. This lovely ‘bay’ exists of 144 islands between Cape Brett and Purerua Peninsula. You can go swimming, snorkeling, sailing, and hiking. It is a slice of paradise.
So you are looking for fairytale bays, golden beaches, and turquoise waters. The Bay of Islands is definitely the place to be. If you like the hustle and bustle you should set up camp in Paihia. Do you appreciate peace and quiet and some historic value? Then you should find yourself a campsite or b&b in Russell.
We spend a couple of days in the bay when we were on our way to Cape Reinga. A day on the water with the Tucker Thompson (an iconic tall ship) was one of the best days in New Zealand. Check out our design that was inspired by this beautiful sunny day.
